All medicines may cause side effects, however the majority of people who use the product correctly have little to no side effects. No COMMON side effects have been reported with Tums chewable tablets besides unpleasant taste. However if any of the following occurs seek medical attention immediately:
Severe allergic reactions such as rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; severe dizziness; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue.
("Tums Regular Strength Side Effects," 2013, pg. 2)
These medications work to neutralize stomach acid, however we actually need this acid to break down food (Talbot, 2010).

Misuse of Product
If someone consumes an overdose of Tums there may be more side affects. You should never consume over 16 tables within a 24 hour time span or you put yourself at risk of getting a calcium carbonate overdose. These side affects include: upset stomach, loss of appetite, vomiting, constipation or diarrhea, mood or mental changes, and muscle twitching or heart rate changes (Uddin, 2011, pg. 1). If you think you may have any of these report to you doctor.
Alternatives
If you experience heartburn, indigestion, or an upset stomach you can consume natural apple cider vinegar, or you can take it in tablet form. Consuming this will not alter the acidic balance in your system (Sioux, 2013). If you are having acid problems then you can eat an apple.
